It’s time for warm season grass aeration! Aeration is done twice and year and more often if you have turf grass like centipede or St. Augustine. Aeration benefits your lawn by reducing runoff, increases drought tolerance, loosens compacted soil, stimulates root growth and improves health.
The hot summer months, if you have zoysia, centipede, St. Augustine or Bermuda grasses, are the perfect months to aerate your lawn. Summer is the prime growing season for these warm season grasses but you will want to wait to aerate when the temperature is mild and the soil is moist but not wet.
The aerification process does not cost much and for a small lawn you can easily use a spading fork that will go about 4 inches deep in the soil. If you want to try an easier method, purchase a sod coring tool. This tool will actually remove cores from the lawn instead of just pushing down the soil further. If you have a large lawn you will want to purchase or rent a power aerator.
You can easily combine aeration with seeding your lawn if you have areas that aren’t growing as well as you would like. Make sure you have created enough holes through aeration for seeding. Ideally, it would be best to wait about a month before seeding after aeration for the best success rate and more even growth of your lawn.
Using the aerfication and seeding process, a month apart, will give your landscape and lawn a fresh and beautiful look!
