Our Geographical location in this country is known as the “transition zone”, this means that both cool and warm season turf grasses can thrive in this environment. The example of a cool season turf in this area is fescue. Cool season turf stays green year round and thrives from early fall to late spring. It is more apt to suffer from drought and heat stress, thus during the hot and dry parts of the year it may not look as good showing signs of stress. It also has a difficult time with high humidity as it is more susceptible to fungi when it is weak.

The most common example of warm season turf in this area consists of Bermuda and Zoysia turf. Warm season turf thrives in our area from late spring to early fall. Warm season turf also goes dormant in the late fall while holding a tan color until it starts to break dormancy and green up in the spring.

Fescue is a cool season turf that thrives in cooler temperatures and lower humidity; hence it looks and performs better during fall and spring in this area. A major benefit of Fescue is that it stays green year round. The negative characteristic of Fescue turf is that it does not handle hot, dry days and humidity in this area. It is more prone to Fungi and will need to be re-seeded every year during the fall.

Bermuda and Zoysia are warm season turf grasses that look there best in late spring into early fall. They both handle the stresses of drought and heat better than cool season turf. They do not stay green year round, as they seek dormancy in the late fall and winter months.
